What is TMJ?

TMJ describes the temporomandibular joint. That’s the joint that connects your jaw to the rest of your skull. These muscles and joints help you chew, talk, yawn, and more. TMD stands for temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD). It’s a type of disorder that happens when problems develop between your jaw muscles and the joint. People that suffer from TMD can experience a wide range of unpleasant symptoms. This can include annoying noises (like clicks and pops), difficulty chewing, and facial swelling. Your jaws could actually become fixed in open or closed positions. TMD is the second most common cause for jaw and mouth pain. It ranks  only behind toothaches.

What Can We Do for TMJ?

The key to TMJ treatment is an early diagnosis.  When TMD is caught early, when symptoms are only mild or moderate, we have a variety of successful treatment options.  These range from practices as simple as adjusting life habits and TMJ massage and exercise therapies, to bite adjustments and night guard appliance treatments.   All these options are designed to help minimize the destructive forces that clenching and grinding place on the jaw muscles/TMJ and help restore natural function and decrease pain.  Various medications like mild muscle relaxers and anti-inflammatories are also sometimes used in conjunction with these treatments. For more severe TMD, orthognathic and TMJ surgeries are sometimes required.
